Game Modes

There are 4 game modes:

  • Lite Mode - Beginner/Tutorial mode in which the charts are a lot simpler than the normal charts, and has tutorial information in it.
  • Popular Mode - You play through 3 stages of songs, with a different song list per stage. Each song list can be extended by unlocking them through Platinum Crew Mode successfully.
  • Technical Mode - You select a 'set' to play (currently 8 sets to choose from), and you choose 3 songs from this set (7 to choose from) to play through, like in Popular Mode. However, your health bar will drop at the same rate as in Popular Mode, but will need a LOT more successful note hits to come back up. Also, if you are below a certain health level at the end of a song, you will fail the set. This level is determined by the current stage you are on. After the three songs, you will play a 4th song, depending on your performance on the first three. Some sets have 3 songs as the 4th 'boss' song, but most have only 2. The requirement to get to the higher one is usually 95% MAX.
    • Randomizer set is an exception to these rules, and will just pick 4 songs at total random for you to play. No effects allowed. They might even be the same 4 songs.
  • Platinum Crew Mode
    • Mission Mode - After choosing a mission out of the 40 missions shown, you will play the 3 allocated songs (Popular Mode health bars), and get a reward (MAX points, a Set in Technical Mode, or a Song unlock in Popular Mode) for completing them. Some missions may have clear requirements, such as playing with an effect on, or a score condition, or a combo condition.
    • Weekly Mode - Every week on tuesday, a new set of 3 songs is unlocked for that week only. Records are online and unchangable after the week is done.
    • Monthly Mode (Special) - Every month, a new set of 3 songs is unlocked permanently (according to overseas versions). Rewards are MAX points or a Set in Technical Mode.
    • Event Mode - I have no idea. Apparently competitions will be held through this mode, but time will tell.

Note that with a Platinum Crew card, you are able to have a 'permanent' DJ name and scores will be recorded online, if the card is registered online.
Also, during Popular and Technical mode, you are able to choose effects that are in place whilst you play.
IMPORTANT: UNLOCKS ONLY LAST FOR THREE ATTEMPTS. After using those three attempts (for example, unlocking Challenger Set, then playing that Set three times), you will need to do the mission to unlock it for a further three attempts. You can stockpile up to 50 attempts.

Protip: To learn the game effectively, I suggest playing Popular Mode until you can easily clear the 2nd/3rd songs. This is because in Technical Mode, you will fail if your health drops too low. This requires you to hit perhaps at least 90% of notes. You can also help yourself greatly by viewing videos of songs in advance. Just learning the rhythm of the song is good enough in most cases.

Note Types

During gameplay, there are 4 types of notes:

  • Normal Note (Pink) - Just hit it.
  • Repeater (Purple) - Hit the start note whenever the sliders goes across it.
  • Chain Note (Yellow with dots) - Drag along it, you should be dragging dot to dot as the slider goes through it.
  • Drag Note (Thick yellow line) - Drag along it with the slider.

It is much easier to find out what they are by watching a video of the game in action, either screen view or live view.

There are also bugs that are abusable in this game in relation to notes to hit. This video pretty much explains it all.
In case you missed it, drags are abusable, holds are abusable, and pink notes can be played like a loooong drag.
Note that this isn't very smart to do when playing seriously, as you are likely to miss due to the erratic hand movements required.

Cards

Cards are generally available from the arcade you are playing in.
Available card styles (normal):

There are a few other limited edition cards as well.

With cards, the procedure is as follows:

  • Buy a card
  • Play on any machine that is connected to the internet, and make sure to use ID card access. You should get an error.
  • Now go to the website http://djmaxcrew.com and register online
  • Enter the serial key on the back of your card when asked
  • Finish up registering. You can now play on any NET machine, and it will register your scores online.

Titles / Experience

After getting a card, your title will also go up as you play.
Missions all have a minimum required DJ Title to play.

For finishing a song, exp is given as follows:

RankExp
S10
A9
B8
C7

To find out how much exp you have,

Current Title = MiddleMan (2000)
Next title = Main DJ (3200)
% through = 60%

current experience
= ((3200 - 2000) * 60%) + 2000
= 1200*0.6 + 2000
= 2720

Sets

  • Lite/Pop give you exp after beating a song.
  • Technical gives you exp after completing a set.
  • Platinum Crew Mode gives you exp after completing a set, and also gives you a bonus for first time completion.

Therefore, the fastest way to level, would be finish each mission once, then spam First Step set continuously.

PHP formula to find out the max score of a song:

function score($combo) {
   $score = 0;
   if ($combo > 400) { $score = $score + (($combo - 400) * 388); $combo = 400;}
   if ($combo > 300) { $score = $score + (($combo - 300) * 385); $combo = 300;}
   if ($combo > 200) { $score = $score + (($combo - 200) * 382); $combo = 200;}
   if ($combo > 100) { $score = $score + (($combo - 100) * 364); $combo = 100;}
   if ($combo >  50) { $score = $score + (($combo -  50) * 349); $combo =  50;}
   $score = $score + $combo * 334;
   return $score;
}

To get high scores for sets (Popular single songs you simply need the best score, but this rule applies to Popular Total Scores), you MUST play the High Scoring Sets. However, these sometimes need you to play a 4th song that requires 95% or less MAX. To do this, you must still full combo the song, BUT at the same time have enough non-MAXes (preferabley COOLs) to still get the song. This is noted on the Technical page.
